How to make collection?

I never think too much about how to make collection

Before, for me launching collection is about designing clothes that I want to wear

And I believe so many fashion stores in Indonesia do the same

Especially for clothing line which runs its business online, I do research and mostly they don't have collection

But just producing the products which are in trend

Well, not wrong, but.. I remembered I talked to my friend, my senior when I was in ITB

She said fashion in Indonesia has no identity, yet

And even the people, mostly use the clothes which are in trend, not the style

I guess it's not people's fault but mostly because of the fashion business itself like I explained above

Soo many is just producing the products which are in trend

It doesn't mean that Indonesian fashion has no awareness of launching a collection

But, again but, the one who's aware has a very expensive brand, like.. not reachable for medium class, as the majority of Indonesian people

Well, Indonesian said "ada asap pasti ada api", which means there's always a reason, a link to everything

I hope when I post this, maybe, maybe, there's one or more fashion store owner notice about this, and learn to improve Indonesian fashion future

So, how to make Collection?

1. Know what do you like

What do you like, because your design will always about you, and what you like. 

Some people may not notice about what they like and getting confused, then the simplest way is just.. look at the mirror and notice the way you dress yourself

Is it gothic? Is it girly? Is it boyish? Is it classy?

You will say "aha!" and notice directly what you like

2. Make a story

Make a story about your collection, what do you want to do, what this is about, what's inside your mind

What inspired you, anything!

This is like the rule of thumb or main direction of your collection so you don't lost 

3. Take inspiration

Famous fashion designers always use the word "inspiration"

It is prohibited for us to say "copy" or "stole ideas", but you may say "inspired"

Logically, inspired sounds like an excuse, but when I do it myself, it's very different

Inspiration is something that you can get from deep thought, it's an art of thinking and being creative

It's about yourself

So how to get inspiration?

Take some pictures from Google, tumblr, or anywhere which you like, and put them in A4 paper

You should take like the pictures which are connected with what you like

Then, put in your drawing book

You will get inspired.. soo much!

4. Don't be monoton

A collection is not about same clothes with same fabric everywhere, 

but it's about the cohesiveness one to another

Use 4 different fabrics and colors, challenge yourself to create beyond your imagination

However, you should remember that collection is about one story, one collection should 

consist of clothes which tells same story
